Searching for the ways to keep rats and mice out of your garage? Well, I was doing the same a few days ago.
Today, when I woke up I saw a mouse dead on the floor. There might be a question in your mind that “How did you do that”? So, Here is the answer.
A few days ago, I realized the movements of mice in my room. However, dealing with them was not an easy task. I started to search for different methods on the internet. I decided to share my experience with my audience, so what I have learned so far, let’s have a look!
Among all the methods I decided to try bait because it was very easy to use. I kept several pieces of bait in my room. Unfortunately, not even one of the mice touched the bait. One and a half week passed and I saw the mice dancing in my room during that span of time.
Gladly, today I found one of the mice dead on the floor. One thing which I experienced was that there is no guarantee that the method you are going to use would bring results or not. Because there are different types of mice, some of them are very clever and sensitive.
I tried different methods and got success with the bait. I will mention almost all the methods here. I am pretty much sure that you would be able to secure your garage and house from mice and rats.
This article is more inclined to show you the ways to avoid rats and mice in your garage. However, the methods are equally applicable to your garage and house.
The mice look nice and cuddly but they can damage the electric wires and even cause a fire. They spread various diseases if they not controlled in time. When they are in your garage they can multiply them very quickly. And when they are in huge numbers, they are hard to handle.
The mice love to live in the garage as they offer more shelter to them and to invade in the garage is pretty easy for them. Controlling them in the very early stages is the perfect approach, otherwise, in your very own garage, they would make you realize as if you were living at their place.
If mice are not controlled properly, they can make their way to your home via the garage. The rational approach is to seal your garage’s door to keep mice out and use other useful methods to deal with the mice already living there.
How do you know that the mice or rats are present in your garage? Here are some simple steps to determine their presence.
How to Know If Mice Live in Your Garage
Rodent Droppings Are a Big Sign of Presence
The rodent droppings are a big sign of the presence of mice. Mostly, the droppings are found where the rodents are living and near the food storage. Other than that, the droppings are found near cupboards, in the kitchen, on the rodents’ route etc.
When the droppings are fresh, they are mostly wet and dark in color. As the droppings run dry, they become greyish in color and fall apart when touched. If the droppings are fresh, it means they are still active and living there.
Chewing Sound & Gnaw Marks
The rodents scratch the nest where they are living and you can easily hear that scratching sound. Mostly, they are active at night and frequently gnaw the things. Moreover, you can easily spot the gnaw marks and confirm the presence of rodents.
The gnaw marks are further classified as – new gnaw marks and old gnaw marks. The new gnaw marks are usually lighter in color and they also indicate that the mice are continually gnawing. These two signs, the chewing sound and gnaw marks, can indicate the presence of rodents in your garage or house.
The mice like to chew the things that produce some sound; this can be a sign of their presence in your garage or house. , if you have determined their presence after reading this sign you can move on to the section of different ways to avoid mice and rats in your garage.
The urine of mice and rats is another sign of their presence. Other than their nesting area, their urine stains can be seen in different places.
Cats are usually attracted to the place where mice are active and this is because of the foul smell of rodents. If your pet is wandering around the area very frequently where it had no interest before is a sign of the presence of rodents. Take a flashlight and search that area properly. Chances are high you would find the nest of mice.
The rodents, especially rats and mice, are very clever in making their nests when they move to a new place. Mostly, they use the papers, cotton, pieces of clothes, to make their nests. You will find droppings near their nests and this is the signal of their presence. I found their nest in one of the side tables in my bedroom.
You can see the tracks, developed due to the continuous movements of mice, around your garage. Mostly, the mice are keenly interested in the trash piles. They make their way to the organic waste and piles of trash eventually forming the runway to the trash.
You can also point out the direction of the runways and tracks. If the track ends up in your garage it means they are the resident of your garage, don’t let them be the permanent resident.
Track the runways in the daylight; otherwise, detecting the tracks at night is a very hard job.
I had seen a documentary filmed on how the rats and mice can ruin the crops and agricultural land. Controlling the mice when their population is in thousands is almost impossible for a single person. However, there are some companies assisting to control mice; if they are large in quantity.
Why not nip the evil in the bud? Find out whether they are very large in number or not. If you see them at night and not in the daytime, they are probably very less in quantity. And controlling them in the early stages or when they are short in number is very easy.
Before you move on to deal with the mice and rats, know the difference between them. Because not every method works equally for rats and mice.
Difference between Mice & Rats
Your efforts would be more successful when you know the difference between rats and mice. Because they have different sizes, food preferences, behavior, and color.

How to Keep Rats & Mice Out of Your Garage
The statement “Prevention is better than cure” is very common and we are well familiar with this sentence and already heard it a lot of times. This statement fits on the garage too. It is very easy to keep mice out of the garage if the precautionary measures are taken properly than to evacuate them after they had taken their place.
There are different methods that are used to prevent mice from entering the garage. Some of them are very common and you may have already used them. But, I have devised them in the form of a list. Bookmark this page, in case your one method fails you can come here and adopt the next method to get rid of mice.
Seal the Garage Door
The easiest way for the mice to get in the garage is the garage door. The mice can easily chew up the weather stripping and get in, if this is the case, you can apply the Rodent Guard which is hard to chew for the rodents and they can’t enter the garage.
The gaps at the bottom of the door are filled up with the garage door seal. Not only it helps to keep rats and mice out of the garage, it also helps to make the garage dust and rain proof. When applying the garage door seal, be sure to attach the seal properly.
The garage door seal alone can’t secure your garage if the door is damaged from the bottom. Take a metal sheet and repair it as soon as possible.
Seal the Airways & Air Conditioner Connections
The airways and air conditioner connections are a great way for the mice to get through. So, to prevent mice from entering your garage, seal the airways and air conditioner connections. Use the metal mesh to close the holes and vents. Make sure to seal every possible gateway that mice can use to enter the garage.
These were the methods to prevent the rats and mice from entering the garage, now let’s have a look at the methods to evacuate the mice from the garage.
One of the most common ways to get rid of mice is the traps. There are different types of traps which are currently used overall in the world. Here are some of the key points that you must keep in your mind regarding traps:
- If your garage is attached to your house avoid to use poisonous traps. Because the kids can get in the garage and may touch the poisonous trap. Also, the traps with springs can harm your pet and kids. So, be careful. However, if you have a detached garage, you may use the poisonous traps and spring traps, again, be careful.
- Use effective bait. Before placing the trap, determine the place where the mice frequently visit; you can do so with the help of their droppings.
- Dispose of the body of the mouse as soon as possible because the rodents carry parasites and spread diseases. Wear gloves when disposing of the body.
Types of Traps
Multiple Catch Traps – The multiple catch traps is an economical solution to get rid of mice. The multiple catch traps can capture and hold several mice. There is no need to dispose of the body every time. Just keep the trap near the nest of the mice, use effective bait and wait for the mice to get in the trap.
When you see the trap has captured several mice, drop the mice approximately one mile from your garage so that their returning chance is very rare.
Snap Mouse Traps – A snap mouse trap is usually made of metal, wood, or plastic. The snap mouse trap instantly sends the mouse to permanent rest when it gets contact with the trap. Use some type of bait to attract the mouse to the trap. Use gloves when removing the mouse body from the snap trap.
Glue Mouse Traps – This type of traps is completely harmless for the rodents. They are inexpensive and extremely easy to use. Other than the mice they can capture snakes, insects, and other small pests. The adhesive force of the glue mouse traps weakens in the dusty environment. Don’t use them if you have a large number of mice in your garage.
Electronic Mouse Traps – The electronic mouse traps are a great example of innovation. They send the rats and mice to permanent rest within seconds. They are extremely easy to use, just place it in your garage and turn it ON. When the mouse enters the trap, it is given a high jolt of current. Usually, they come with the two lights – red and green. The red light indicates low battery and the green light indicates that the mouse has been captured. You can trash the bodies even without touching them which is the most appropriate feature of electronic mouse traps.
Declutter Your Garage
Remove clutter from your garage. For removing the clutter, reorganize your garage and throw out the things that you don’t need anymore. Sell out the items you can. For organizing your tools, read the tool storage ideas which would help you to store your tools like a professional.
Trim Tree Limbs
The rodents are clever enough to hide near the trees and come out to search for food. Especially if you have trees near your garage you should trim the limbs. The mice can climb up the trees and enter the garage via air vents. So, trimming the tree limbs would make the environment less feasible for the rodents.
Take Out the Trash Frequently
One of the favorite nests for the rodents is the trash. If you have a trash bucket in your garage, clean it frequently or use a trash bucket with a lid. Doing so will discourage the rodents to make their nests in the garage.
Make Environment Less Feasible For Rodents
Make the overall environment less feasible for the rats and mice. Don’t leave an excess of food in your garage. Also, don’t store your pet’s food in your garage; rather store the food in a closed cabin. Close the large spaces and vents from where the rodents can enter the garage.
Also, examine the garage from outside. Remove any feasible condition for the mice to enter the garage. At last but not least, clean the bird feeders if any.
Super Natural Ways to Keep the Mice Away
Use onions to repel the mice
You may get success using one of the natural ways to keep the mice out of your home or garage. Here are some cheapest and natural ways to control mice:
Mice hate the sharp smell of onions. You can easily get an onion and place in your garage. The onion’s smell will only change the way of the mice. So, you should keep the pieces of onion near the entryway. Throw out the rotten onions and place new pieces. If you get any success using this method, then keep doing.
Another natural way to keep the mice away is to use the peppermint oil. The mice hate the fragrance of peppermint oil. Just dip the cotton balls in peppermint oil and place them at different places in your garage. Throw some cotton balls near the entryways.
You can also use the instant mashed potatoes to get rid of mice in your garage. What you need to do is to scatter the small quantity of instant mashed potatoes on different places in your garage. The potato flakes are impossible to digest for the mice; they eventually die.
Cats are a natural hunter of mice. Consider keeping a cat in your garage. Not all cats are used to catch the mouse. Look for a clever and energetic cat that spends some time outdoors because such cats find their food on their own. If you are using any other natural method such as instant mashed potatoes or onions, be sure to keep them out of the pet’s range.
Making the conditions less feasible for mice in your garage is the best approach in my opinion. If the precautionary measures are taken properly, the mice would hardly get a chance to hide in the garage.
Usually, when the garage door is left open for several minutes or hours, that time span is the golden chance for the mice to get in the garage. First, you should take all the steps to make the environment less feasible for mice, secondly, use the mentioned devices to capture those living in the garage.
